Is Arizona Green Tea Good For You? Spoiler Alert: The Answer is No

We’ve all seen the aesthetically pleasing cans filled with pretty colors and promises of healthy ingredients. They’re literally everywhere. You can’t go to a gas station without a row of Arizona iced tea catching your eye. If you’re looking for something that’s supposed to be healthy at a great price point of $.99 cents, why wouldn’t you grab one?

Green tea is notoriously healthy, and the Arizona green tea can boasts not only delicious tea but ingredients like honey and ginseng. They do a fantastic job of making a healthy looking product that’s at a great price point. Yes, it does taste good, but at what cost? For an affordable price like they advertise, it’s too good to be true, right? Yes, it is. Arizona iced tea comes in many flavors, and they’re all jam-packed with enough sugar to outweigh any health benefits you may be getting.  

Tea is a great addition to any diet, and it can help you resolve gut health issues. With antioxidants and other healing properties, you can and should be drinking tea. Is Arizona green tea healthy? Probably not. Let’s look at Arizona green tea nutrition facts, and what you can drink instead.

Arizona Green Tea Nutrition Facts

To start, let’s break down what’s really going on inside those lovely teal cans. At first glance, this product lures you in with words like ‘ginseng’ and ‘honey.’ Seeing these health-conscious buzzwords on the can make it easy to forget to read the fine print.  

One of the most important things you should do when buying products like this is to check the label for nutrition facts. Arizona iced tea is commonly sold in 23oz cans, and it’s easy to suck the whole sugary concoction down in minutes. If you look at the fine print, one serving is 8oz. So, that means each can is around 3 servings!


When you see the word ginseng, your mind automatically assumes healthy. That’s because it is! Ginseng is a Chinese herb that has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. When it’s used properly, ginseng can boost your immunity, enhance memory and give you more energy. Studies have shown that ginseng’s therapeutic properties may be helpful in treating:  

  • Alzheimer’s
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Depression
  • And more 

The seemingly endless health benefits of ginseng are why Arizona Iced Tea was quick to slap it on the label. In 2019, AriZona was sued in a class-action lawsuit stating that AriZona green tea did not actually have ginseng extract in it’s ingredients. While there may be small amounts of ginseng extract present in AriZona green tea, the sheer amount of sugar listed in the nutrition facts is enough to cancel it out.

Sugar Content in AriZona Iced Tea

The American Heart Association recommends limiting added sugars to no more than 6 percent of your daily calories. That’s about 9 teaspoons a day for men, and 6 for women. AiZona iced tea greatly exceeds these limits in just one can, and this is why paying attention to the nutrition facts is so important.

One can of AriZona green tea is 23oz, and a single serving is listed at 8oz. The nutrition facts for AriZona green tea list 17g of sugar for each serving. That’s a lot of sugar! Other teas they sell such as AriZona sweet tea have 21g per serving, and AriZona peach tea has 17g per serving, as well. So, if you at a 23oz can of AriZona iced tea, most will have around 68g. You certainly aren’t going to save part of your $.99 cent can for later, people tend to finish them in one sitting.

The sugar content in AriZona iced tea comes from high fructose corn syrup, as well. We all know this type of sweetener is not great, but we’ll explain why. You can find this type of sweetener in almost every mass-produced drink like sodas and juice. It’s cheap and easy to get from suppliers, which makes it a popular choice for companies. The problem is that in liquid form, your body will absorb the sugar faster in the gut, which can cause an increase in fat.

Normal sugar contains glucose, which will be broken down into the bloodstream, but fructose goes to your liver. This can cause health problems like fatty liver disease, diabetes and hut health issues. High fructose corn syrup can even decrease the diversity of bacteria in your gut microbiome. So, if you’re trying to improve your gut health AriZona iced tea, and anything with high fructose corn syrup should be avoided. Do not be fooled by the labels on AriZona ice tea, and always read the nutrition facts!

AriZona does offer a diet green tea, which contains only 1g of sugar per serving. This is still an artificial sweetener, however.  The drinks are marketed as better alternatives to soda, but they appear to iclude similar ingredients.

AriZona Hard Iced Tea

A recent item that the AriZona tea company has rolled out is their alcohol beverages. AriZona hard iced tea looks just like the regular cans, advertising the same healthy ingredients along with alochol. It could be easy to miss that it’s alcoholic looking at that label, too. Even though it’s alcoholic, it has tea so it’s going to be easier on your gut, right? Wrong.

Regardless of being mixed with AriZona tea, alcohol is famously bad for gut health. Your microbiome, which is home to an ecosystem of over 50 trillion bacteria is a special place. Drinking alcohol can kill off the good bacteria, causing an imbalance in your gut. Alcohol can also lead to overgrowth of badb acteria which can cause bloating, indigestion and other problems in the gut. If you’re working on your gut health, alcohol is typically something you should avoid or cut back on while you get things back in balance.

Another thing to consider with this product is that it has the same sugar content as the regular AriZona green tea, as well as caffeine. All green tea is caffeinated, and the combination of alcohol with caffiene can be a complete nightmare for your gut.

Caffeine is a natural stimulant that we’re all familiar with. It gives us that extra pep we need to get going in the morning. Small amounts of caffeine are totally fine for the gut, and coffee has even been known to increase growth of certain gut bacteria. It can be dehydrating, however, and when mixed with alcohol it can be a recipe for disaster.  

Alcohol is a depressant, and caffeine is, of course, a stimulant. When they’re mixed together, caffeine can cancel out the depressant effects of alcohol which can lead to overconsumption that can damage the body and be detrimental to your gut health. Now, the caffeiene content in tea isn’t incredibly high, but if you have a sensitive gut the combination found in AriZona hard iced tea should be avoided.

Green tea on its own is a fabulous addition to any diet, and especially if you’re trying to improve your gut health. It’s jam-packed with antioxidants, it tastes good, and there are several healthy ways to drink it. Green tea is also known to improve brain function, and contains polyphenols which can help reduce inflammation and fight cancer.
